    Moong Dal Tadka is usually made as a thick gravy made with moong dal and coconut. It is served with idiyappam.

     

    Moong Dal Tadka Recipe | Moong Dal Coconut Gravy recipe with Step by step photos. Moong Dal Coconut Gravy is one staple food in our home. It’s my mom’s recipe. Most of the time idiyappam is paired with this moong dal gravy the combo is absolutely delicious. The same can be served with rice as well. The gravy is usually made slightly thick. And doing the tadka with ghee makes it more divine. Now lets see how to prepare Moong Dal Coconut Gravy.

      Step by step Method with pictures: 
         1.    Dry Roast the moong dal till you get a nice aroma, in a pressure cooker add in the roasted moong dal along with Onion, garlic and required water.

     2.    Cook for 4 whistles in a medium flame and wait till the pressure get released on its own. Meanwhile grind the coconut and cumin seeds together by adding little water to a fine paste.

      3.    Mashed the cooked dal with a ladle, to this next add in turmeric powder, Chilli powder and the required salt along with the ground coconut puree.

     4.    Mix well. If it’s too thick add little water and bring it to a gravy consistency. Heat a pan with oil /ghee to this add in the mustard seeds and cumin seeds ,then dry red chilli ,Hing and curry leaves.

    5.    To this add in the dal. Cook in a medium flame till comes to a boil and switch off.

    Ingredients

    • Moong Dal – ½ cup
    • Onion – 1
    • Garlic pods – 5
    • Chilli powder – ½ tsp
    • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
    • Salt as needed

    To Grind :

    • Grated coconut – ¼ cup
    • Cumin Seeds – ½ tsp

    To Temper:

    • Ghee / Oil – 2 tsp
    • Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
    • Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
    • Dry Red Chilli – 3
    • Hing /Asafoetida a generous pinch
    • Curry Leaves a spring

    Notes

    · Goes well with appam and idiyappam.
    · Garnish with coriander leaves if you prefer.
