Chemeen Thoran | Shrimp Coconut Masala

Prawn thoran is one common side dish mom makes with prawn and it goes perfectly well with White Rice and Fish Fry

Standard 1 cup measures 240 ml

Ingredients

  • Prawns – ¼ kg
  • Coconut Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Fennel Seeds – ½ tsp
  • Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
  • Curry Levaes a spring
  • Shallots – 8- 10
  • Crushed ginger – ½ tsp
  • Dry Red Chilli – 3
  • Chilli powder – ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Salt as needed

To Grind :

  • Coconut – ¼ cup
  • Shallots - 3
  • Garlic pods – 3
  • Dry Red Chilli - 2

Instructions 

  • Heat a pan with oil, once its hot add in Mustard Seeds and Fennel Seeds ,let them splutter and then add in the curry leaves and Dry red chilli. Saute and the add in the chopped small onions. Saute till they turn glossy.
  • Chop the prawn insto small pieces and marinate them with salt, Turmeric powder and chilli powder and set aside. Meanwhile grind the ingredients mentioned under the “To Grind” section to a coarse paste and set aside.
  • Once the onions are done add in the crushed ginger saute till the raw smell leaves and then add in the marinated prawn and then add on the Ground coconut masala.
  • Mix everything together and then cover and cook. The prawns will start to leave water and cook. After 5 mins open the lid and cook till the prawns become dry and get cooked completely. Switch off and serve hot with Rice.

Notes

  •  Goes well with Steamed Rice.
  •  Coconut Oil gives and awesome flavour. So don’t miss that.
  •  Instead of marinating the prawns you can also add the masala powders directly and cook. Tastes good in both ways.
