Red Amaranthus Stir Fry | Sivappu thandu Keerai Poriyal

Red Amaranthus Stir Fry is a healthy lunch side dish made with red spinach along with a coconut masala. Goes very well with rice.

  • Red Amaranthus – 1 bunch
  • Onion – 1
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Salt as needed

To Grind:

  • Grated Coconut – ¼ cup
  • Dry Red Chilli - 3


  • Heat a pan with oil once hot add in the Cumin seeds and Urad Dal. Let them splutter and then add in the Onions. Sauté till glossy.
  • Next add in the salt and turmeric powder. Cook for a min and then add in the Cleaned and chopped Keerai.
  • Cook in a medium flame. Meanwhile in a blender add in the grated coconut and dry red chilli. Grind it to a coarse paste.
  • Once the keerai is fully cooked add in the ground coconut paste cook for another 2 mins in a low flame and switch off the flame.


  • Goes well with Rice and spicy gravy.
  • Make sure you clean the keerai well before cooking as there might be small sand particles.
  • Never add water while cooking the keerai.
  • Always cook on a medium low flame.
