Basbousa

Basbousa is an Egyptian sweet dish made of semolina. It is baked to perfection and finally soaked in sugar syrup.

Standard 1 cup measures 240 ml

Ingredients

  • 1.25 cups Semolina
  • ¼ cup Butter
  • ¼ cup Curd / Yogurt
  • ½ cup Water
  • ½ cup tsp Baking powder
  • ½ cup Condensed milk

For Sugar Syrup:

  • ¾ cup Sugar
  • ½ cup Water
  • ½ tsp Lemon Juice

Instructions 

  • In a mixing bowl add Yogurt and condensed milk
  • Next, add melted butter.
  • Next, add Water and Baking powder and whisk everything together.
  • Finally add in Semolina and then fold everything together.
  • Prepare a cake pan by greasing it with butter and line with parchment paper.
  • Now pour the prepared batter into the baking pan. Preheat the oven to 356 F / 180 Deg C for about 10 mins. Bake at 356 F / 180 Deg C for about 20 mins or until a toothpick when inserted comes out clean.

Sugar Syrup

  • For the sugar syrup in a sauce pan add in water and sugar.
  • Bring everything to a boil in a medium flame. It takes around 8-10 mins.
  • Finally, add Lemon Juice and switch off the flame.
  • When the cake is slightly warm pour the sugar syrup. Let it soak for 30 mins. Slice and serve.
