There are so many names for this humble sura puttu. It is more or like a bhurji we scramble to shredded fish pieces along with the onion and spice powders. It is so easy to prepare and just yummy. If you are including sea food in you diet regularly. I recommend trying this easy and yummy fish podimas recipe.

Fish puttu has lot of medical benefits especially paal sura fish which is primarily used in preparing the dish
It increases the breast milk supply for lactating mothers and hence they try to feed the fish in some form.
Ingredients
Fish - Use paal sura fish for the best results.
Oil - Cooking in coconut oil gives a fresh and authentic taste and hence I highly recommend it. If you are not a fan of coconut oil you may still cook with groundnut oil.
Onion - Use red onion or shallots as you prefer.
Spice powders - Very minimal spice powders we use just the turmeric powder, Chilli powder, and pepper powder.
Coconut - gives a nice taste and volume to the dish.
How to Prepare Meen Puttu
Cook the Fish
- In a pan add in water once it boils add in a required salt and a pinch of turmeric powder and cook the fish till it’s done and switch off the flame.
- Allow it to cool down and then. Remove the bones from the fish and shred the fish in to small pieces.
How to make fish puttu
1.Heat oil in a pan once it heats up add in Mustad Seeds, fennel seeds, urad dal.
2. Let it splutter and then add in curry leaves and ginger garlic paste. Cook till the raw smell leaves.
3. Then add in chopped onions and green chilli. Cook till they turn glossy

4. Next add in the shredded fish pieces and saute in a low flame for 5 mins.
5. Finally add in freshly grated coconut and mix well.
6. Garnish with coriander leaves and switch off the flame. Serve hot with rice.
Sura meen puttu is now ready to serve.
Tips & Variations
- We can also prepare shark fry or shark curry too with sura fish . You can follow my shark fish curry recipe and shark fry recipe in the blog .
- Chettinad sura puttu recipe - You can follow the same recipe. Additionally we add a special freshly ground masala in the chettinad style sura puttu.
- Sura puttu kerala style - Almost the same but they make sure they use only coconut oil for cooking . Also add more freshly grated coconut.
- While cooking the fish you can either steam cook for boil the fish.
- Steam cooking the fish is what I recommended as they retains the nutritional properties.
- If you dont have access to sura meen or shark fish you can use any other fish. Make sure it has less bones .
- Seer Fish , King fish, Mackerel fish are few other best options.
- You may also add egg and cook along with the fish.
- skip coconut and add egg if you prefer.
- You can also use canned fresh if fresh ones are not available. If using canned fish you may skip the steam cooking part.
Serving Suggestions
Meen puttu goes well with steam rice and any curry. My favorite combo is White rice, verum kuzhambu, Fish fry and fish puttu.

Standard 1 cup measures 240 ml
Ingredients
- ½ kg Fish steam cook or boil the fish with salt and turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1 tsp Fennel seeds
- ½ tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Urad Dal
- 1 sprig Curry Leaves
- 3 Green Chilli
- 1 Onion
- 6 clove Garlic
- 1 inch piece Ginger
- 1 tsp Chilli powder
- ½ tsp Pepper powder
- ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
- Salt as needed
- 4 tbsp grated coconut
- Coriander leaves to garnish
